The Big Give raises over £750k for Nepal earthquake victims
Online giving site The Big Give has raised over £750,000 in a week for victims of the Nepal earthquake through an online match funding campaign.
The match funding was provided by philanthropists including Sir Alec Reed, who founded the site, Michael Spencer’s city-firm ICAP, and other individuals.
Online donations are being handled on behalf of organisations which are responding in Nepal, including the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), Care International and Oxfam. Over 6,000 people have donated to the Nepal appeal on The Big Give.
Alex Day, General Manager of the Big Give, thanked all those who had given and to those who had offered to double online donations.
The match funding has now been exhausted, but donations for charities working in Nepal will be accepted until Friday at 5pm.
Medair
One of the charities which benefitted from the match funding appeal was the Medair who raised around £25,000 in total. Claire Casagrande, Development Manager at Medair UK, said:
“Funding raised through the Big Give will enable Medair to work closely with its partners to deliver shelter kits and essential items to people cut off in remote villages in Sindhupalchok, a district northeast of Kathmandu. According to reports, Sindhupalchok is one of the worst-hit districts affected by the earthquake”.
