Microsoft to generate funds for two nonprofits with Live Search

Howard Lake | 23 January 2007 | News

Microsoft is to use its Live Search tool to generate income from users’ searches for two US nonprofits, Team Seattle and Ninemillion.org.

Users simply have to try Live Search on one of its “click for the cause” sites, and each search will add to the total to be donated by Microsoft.

Ninemillion.org is a United Nations-led campaign providing education and sports programs for nine million refugee youth around the world, and Team Seattle is the “most successful motorsports charity in the US”, racing to benefit Seattle’s Children’s Hospital.

Live Search is also sponsoring the Team Seattle race car at this year’s 24-hour Daytona race. To complement that sponsorship, the team has created the teamseattle.live.com site, where every search carried out adds an incremental $1 to the Microsoft donation.

In addition to the money raised from the searches, Microsoft is also donating online advertising and editorial space across MSN and microsoft.com to the two causes.

Both nonprofits’ search pages can be added easily to users’ Internet Explorer Search Providers list, and can then be made a default. The same can also be achieved in other web browsers.

The campaign runs until March 2007.
