JD Wetherspoon pubs raise £1m in six months for CLIC Sargent
J D Wetherspoon pubs across the UK have raised £1 million in six months, taking the total donated to charity CLIC Sargent to £11 million.
In March the pub chain celebrated hitting the £10 million milestone in funds raised for the charity, which supports children and young people with cancer.
In just six months another £1 million has been raised, through a variety of activities including a darts tournament, pub quizzes, themed events and CLIC Sargent’s UK-wide fundraising event Wig Wednesday, where pub staff wore wigs for the day to support children who may lose their hair through cancer treatment.

The partnership between J D Wetherspoon and CLIC Sargent began in 2002 when J D Wetherspoon founder and chairman Tim Martin met the charity’s then chief executive on a train. An initial fundraising target of £500,000 was set but the response from staff was so huge that each year the target was increased.
Five-a-side football teams from J D Wetherspoon pubs are currently taking part in the annual fundraising Kick! tournament for CLIC Sargent, with the final due to take place on Sunday 4 October.
CLIC Sargent Senior Account Manager Liz Lowrey said: “We’re so grateful to our friends at J D Wetherspoon who show such dedication to supporting CLIC Sargent. It’s not long since we were celebrating them reaching £10million so to have made another £1million is a fantastic achievement.
“The funds raised make a huge difference to what we can do to support children and young people with cancer, and their families. CLIC Sargent is there from diagnosis onwards to provide grants as well as help such as social workers who give practical and emotional support and Homes from Home near hospitals where parents can stay during their child’s treatment.”
J D Wetherspoon Chief Executive John Hutson said: “I’m delighted to be saying another huge congratulations to everyone at J D Wetherspoon and our loyal customers for raising another £1 million for CLIC Sargent.
“We’re all very proud of our partnership with this charity. The money raised has already helped hundreds of children and young people affected by cancer and we’re committed to helping many more.”
