Queens University posts big increase in income

Queens University Foundation in Belfast has increased its fundraising income from £5.2 million in 2012 to £6.5 million in 2013.
The Foundation is the fundraising arm of Queens and has current campaigns to raise money for a range of science, medical and student services.
The bulk of the Foundation’s income came from foundations and trusts which totalled £4.5 million in 2013 (£3.1 million in 2012). In 2012 Atlantic Philanthropies awarded Queen’s a grant of $24 million for its health services centre.
The next largest source of income is corporate at £950,000, up from £880,000 in 2012. The Foundation has been raising money for its executive offices at Riddel Hall over the last few years. Individual income was £740,000 slightly down from 2012 while legacy income £320,000.
The accounts note that the Queens University Foundation is expecting an outstanding legacy of £2 million for clinical cancer research.  In 2013 grants totalling £6.8 million were awarded to university projects.
Queens provides office and administrative facilities to the Foundation and the accounts do not provide a breakdown of expenditure. There is a figure of £4.1 million ‘owed to a related party’ but it is not clear if this is fundraising or related expenditure. The Foundation had 16 staff in 2013.
