Survey finds US grantmakers' use of IT is basic

A new survey of foundations and corporate giving programs reveals that grantmakers use basic electronic communications technology such as the phone, fax and personal computer, but are not yet making full use of computer and Internet capabilities that might benefit them. According to the Grantmakers Technology Report published by the Council on Foundations, many grantmakers, however, do plan to upgrade systems, purchase new equipment, train staff and develop Web sites.
Of the 771 grantmakers responding to the survey, significant percentages of respondents never use Internet-related communications methods, such as sending and receiving individual e-mail (48.3%), subscribing to an Internet mailing list (71.1%), retrieving information from a Web site (50.5%), and posting information to their organisation’s Web site (79.4 percent).
