The Air Ambulance Northern Ireland (AANI) raised £300,000 in its first full year of operation, according to its accounts for 2017.

AANI, in partnership with the NI Ambulance Service, provides the emergency helicopter service for Northern Ireland. The charity’s helicopter carries a crew comprising a pilot, doctor and paramedic and operates every day of the year.

AANI say it costs £5000 a day or £2 million a year to run. The charity says that it will continue to develop its main source of fundraising activity, community fundraising, pending the development of a full fundraising strategy.

AANI also intends to engage more with corporate sources, high net worth individuals and developing a legacy strategy. Income generation through a social enterprise which sells AANI merchandise will also be expanded.

To help promote the charity, AANI says it will engage a communications and marketing partner.

The accounts show a total income of £920,000 which includes funding of £619,000 from the Treasury. This money came from LIBOR fines levied on banks.

The trustees of AANI say their longer term goal is to build up a reserve of £2 million, equivalent to one year’s running costs.

Last year Kerry  Anderson joined the organisation as head of fundraising. Kerry previously worked for Co-operation Ireland, Childline, Action Cancer and Cheat Heart and Stroke.
