Six October fundraising events

Melanie May | 10 October 2016 | News

Here are six of the fundraising events taking place during the month of October, from a feast in the dark for Fight for Sight, to Oxfam’s music festival, and the newly launched #BeBraveWithMe from Royal British Legion Industries.
Feast your Eyes

1) Feast your Eyes

With World Sight Day taking place on 13th October, this Fight for Sight event asks people to host a feast in the dark during October with the money raised funding eye research to help fight sight loss and treat eye disease. Suggestions include a blindfolded breakfast, lights-out lunch, pitch-black picnic, challenging cheese and wine, or dinner in the dark.

2) #MyMileMatters

Running Heroes has launched a charity initiative called #MyMileMatters. It invites people to register their tracking device online, and then run for a charity of their choice. Once they have run a mile on six separate days, they can enter a draw to win £3,000 for their chosen charity, and a one-week trail running holiday for themselves. The challenge must be completed by 20th October. Participating charities include Macmillan, St John Ambulance, and Spinal Research.

4) Wear it Pink

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, Wear it Pink takes place on 21st October, and asks people to wear pink to school, work and at home, and donate or hold an event to raise funds for Breast Cancer Now. Each year, the event raises around £2m for the charity, and the money goes towards funding breast cancer researchers across the UK and Ireland. £28.9m has been raised to date.

5) #BeBraveWithMe

The Royal British Legion Industries’ (RBLI) #BeBraveWithMe campaign asks people to support ex-services men and women by stepping outside of their comfort zone and taking on a brave challenge, then posting a photo or video of their brave act with the hashtag, and nominating three friends to take on the challenge before donating £3 by text. Events so far have included eating bugs, climbing the O2 in London, sky dives, runs, and holding tarantulas. This is the RBLI’s first fundraising campaign through its newly established fundraising division, Support for Britain’s Bravest.

Red White and Blue day

6) Red, White & Blue Day

Taking place on 14th October, Red, White & Blue Day is a joint venture from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, The RAF Benevolent Fund, and The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. It asks schools in the UK, as well as military schools based overseas to encourage pupils to dress up in red, white and blue for a £1 donation, or to hold fundraising events such as bake sales. Funds raised are split between the three charities. Last year’s event raised over £60,000, and 213 schools have so far registered to take part this year.
