The Charity First Series has just published a new guide for UK charities that are trying to fundraise from donors in the USA.
Organising and Operating a US Charity – A Guide to US 501(c)(3) Organisations is a reference guide that explains how charities can obtain and maintain US charitable status, and how they must adhere to federal tax rules that apply to charities that operate in the US.
It covers the rules which govern tax deductible donations, and explains the fundraising and operational implications of qualification as a public charity or private foundation in the US.
The guide has been written by two US tax specialists from Withers LLP, partner Kristin Konschnik and associate Jaime McLemore.
Robert Pike and Jim Myers of SPMfundessentials, who publish The Charity First Series, added that the guide should also be of use to existing 501(c)(3) organisations, and to those in other territories that are contemplating 501(c)(3) status.
Organising and Operating a US Charity – A Guide to US 501(c)(3) Organisations is available as a 38-page A4 PDF download from, priced at £12.99 (inc. VAT). A free downloadable sample is also available from the site.
