HMRC report that donations to charity direct from pay have risen by £6 million to £124 million a year.

The number of staff using the scheme is rising again and, at 750,000, is now at a four year high. The average donation per person has also risen by 40p to £13.78 a month.

The HMRC figures for 2012-13 are derived from returns supplied by Payroll Giving Agencies.

The Geared for Giving campaign welcomed the figures. Peter O’Hara, Managing Director of Workplace Giving UK, which funds the Geared For Giving Campaign which encourages employers to set up and promote the scheme, said that the future of Workplace Giving was encouraging. He said: "The recent statement from Sajid Javid, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, that he is encouraging all MPs to give to charity through Workplace Giving as well as the continued effort from the private sector will all help to build the awareness and effectiveness of the scheme".

O'Hara added that the final figures should be even better. "It is worth noting" he said, "that these provisional figures do not include any employer matching that was worth an additional £8.5 million last year, so we hope the total figure raised last year will be in excess of £130 million when this is included".

The Geared for Giving Campaign has been running for five years and has made payroll giving available to over 2 million more employees.
