Twitterthon raises £2,250 for Marie Curie Cancer Care in 36 hours
Hilary Wardle from Edinburgh has raised over £2,250 for Marie Curie Cancer Care in a 36-hour Twitterthon during which she communicated via Twitter without a break. This short campaign raised more than the £1,600 she had raised in the previous 11 months through traditional fundraising methods such as cake sales.
Wardle (@Hilary_W), a Volunteer Manager at Edinburgh University, began her Twitterthon at 9am on Thursday 22 July and finished at 9pm on Friday 23 July. During this time she posted over 1,500 tweets featuring the twitterthon hashtag, #36hrtwitterthon, and over 400 tweets mentioned her JustGiving page.
Her effort was supported by many other Twitter users, including celebrities such as Ed Byrne, Davina McCall, Paul Daniels, Neil Gaiman, David Schneider, Stephen Mangan, Gail Porter, and journalists Caitlin Moran and India Knight.
Wardle said: “I’ve been completely bowled over by the outpouring of people’s generosity on twitter. It’s been so inspiring and really kept me going, especially during the night. Marie Curie Nurses provided wonderful care for my grandma and enabled her to spend her final days at home so I’m taking part in the charity’s trek across Jordan this November and the twitterthon has helped me enormously to raise funds for the charity.”
