Peter Maple joins Sons of the Clergy as Development Director

Howard Lake | 22 January 2004 | News

The Corporation of the Sons of the Clergy, a leading Anglican charity providing assistance and support to clergy and their families in times of need, has appointed Peter Maple as their first Director of Development.

Maple’s first task will be to help the charity develop a campaign in order to broaden awareness, understanding and support for its work.

“The challenge will be to help the charity position itself to meet changing demands and attitudes,” said Maple. “Many Anglican clergy and their dependants continue to experience real hardship, yet people are simply not aware of the problems or how they can help.”

The Corporation, which is amongst the oldest charities in its field, is about to embark on its 350th Anniversary and is holding its 350th annual festival service in St Paul’s Cathedral in May. It is currently undertaking a review of its work and outreach.

The Registrar, Robert Welsford, commented: “We are delighted that someone of Peter’s calibre and experience has agreed to help us reposition and rise to the challenges facing us, so as to ensure that the charity continues meeting the demands upon it. Many people think that our name is inappropriate, yet we were founded in 1655 by a group of merchants in the City of London who were all sons of clergy and who recognised the urgent need of that time for charitable help for the clergy. That need continues today.”

Peter Maple has nearly 15 years of previous voluntary sector experience including work as Director of Public Affairs at Leonard Cheshire, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Arthritis Care and Campaign Director at the YMCA. He will also continue his role as a Director of Kew Quorum, a fundraising, training and mentoring organisation, and as a trustee of The Cranfield Trust and Hillcroft College.

Peter is author of “Marketing Strategy for Effective Fundraising” published by the Directory of Social Change.
