The Government has announced a new strategy to assist the development of social enterprises.

The Government has published “Social Enterprise: a strategy for success” detailing how it plans to promote social enterprise in the UK.

The strategy includes a review of finance available to social enterprises by the Bank of England, a social enterprise accreditation scheme, an award for the fastest growing social enterprise in an inner city, and the promotion of understanding of social enterprise amongst public sector staff responsible for procurement.

The government defines a social enterprise as “a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.”
