Major golfers to boost fundraising for Rory McIlroy foundation
Fundraising efforts for Rory McIlroy’s charitable foundation have received a major boost with the confirmation that some of world golf’s biggest names will attend the Irish Open in Northern Ireland.
Sergio Garcia and Ernie Els have joined Rickie Fowler as the latest stars to say that they will play in the event in May at Royal County Down. The Rory Foundation, which is Rory McIlroy’s charitable foundation, will host the event.
Lee Westwood and defending champion Finland’s Mikko Ilonen will also be in the field along with Northern Irish major winners Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke.

The Foundation, which was set up last year to raise funds for children’s charities across the world, will also be the tournament’s official charity, with the beneficiaries to be chosen by the Foundation in conjunction with the European Tour.
Last year the Foundation committed itself to raise £1 million over four years towards the running costs of Daisy Lodge, a respite centre for children with cancer. Daisy Lodge is just a few miles from Royal County Down.
Tournament organisers have said that tens of thousands of tickets have already been sold for the event.
