Alzheimer’s Society receives £1m donation from individual supporter

A retired dentist has given Alzheimer’s Society a cheque for £1m in memory of his late wife, who suffered from the illness.
The donation is one of the largest the charity has received from a single donor in its 37-year history.
Over half of the amount donated by Malcolm Joyce will go towards funding new research. It will also fund a range of services for people living with dementia and their carers in his local area of the North East of England, and support Doctoral Training Centres in Bradford and Southampton.
Joyce has chosen to fund just over half of the Doctoral Training Centre in Bradford and is also calling upon others to make a difference too by contributing to the remaining £200,000 needed.
The two centres are among eight that have been set up by Alzheimer’s Society to address the need for research into understanding the underlying causes of the condition and finding ways to provide better care. The centres will recruit 52 new PhD students to develop the next generation of dementia researchers and help ensure a strong dementia research community in the UK.
Joyce said:
“If I can save just one couple from going through what we went through it will have been worth it. There must be lots of people in my position who have been affected by dementia, so if my actions encourage others to make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society that would be a bonus.”
