What young people think about charity workers

Following on from the UK Workfoce Hub’s report on young people’s perceptions of working in the voluntary sector, the Hub has produced a voluntary sector career guide for school leavers and graduates.
The report found that young people perceive the typical person who works in the voluntary and charity sector as old, female and white. The new national programme, which aims to encourage young people to take up work placements with voluntary organisations, sets out to dispel this myth and give young people a more representative view of the sector.
Most young people thought that rich people would be most likely to volunteer or carry out charity work, because they did not need the money. They also thought that charity work was unpaid, with limited roles that were low-paid.

Perceptions were largely based on people who worked in charity shops and young people felt they would not be aware of fashion and would not understand young people and their views.
