TripAdvisor matched giving campaign for refugee crisis raises $750k in two days

Travel site TripAdvisor has raised $750,000 in just two days as part of its fundraising appeal in response to the European refugee crisis. The site’s total donation to two nonprofits helping refugees is now $1.2 million.

On 14 September TripAdvisor CEO Steve Kaufer blogged about how the company was offering up to $375,000 of matched funding for donations from members of its traveler community. This total was reached and passed within 48 hours, “an incredible response” according to a company spokesman.

TripAdvisor reached its matched giving total within 48 hours.

At the same time the TripAdvisor Charitable Foundation donated $250,000 to be split equally between the two nonprofits, The International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Mercy Corps. That donation and the successful matched giving appeal brings the total donation to $1.2 million.
The company is continuing to email its global community encouraging them to support the appeal, so the total is likely to rise. TripAdvisor itself does not handle the gifts: visitors are directed to the two nonprofits’ websites to make the donations.

More matched giving and employee volunteering

In addition TripAdvisor is matching all donations made by TripAdvisor employees around the world to the IRC and Mercy Corps. It is also allowing all TripAdvisor employees to take up to five days of paid leave to volunteer at any nonprofit organisation that is tackling this refugee crisis.
