Microsoft offers $50k each to 10 UK charities in #UpgradeYourWorldUK campaign
Microsoft is running a social media competition to find 10 UK charities who will each receive a donation of $50,000, or around £32,800. The winners will be those that secure the most votes on social media.
Microsoft’s Upgrade Your World initiative coincided with the launch of Windows 10, the new version of its PC operating system. The company said it would donate a total of $10 million to 10 global and 100 local charity partners in countries round the world.
The winning charities will also receive technology and support from Microsoft, such as skilled volunteering.
The company has already chosen its 10 global charity partners, and now it is inviting the public to help it choose 10 more in each of 10 countries – Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Five charities already selected
The first five charities in the UK have already been selected by Microsoft. They are Abilitynet, Childnet International, Comic Relief, Launchpad and UK Youth. The remaining five places are available via this competition.
How to take part
Charities can invite their supporters to vote for them by using the hashtags #UpgradeYourWorldUK and #Vote on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and tagging the charity by its name.
For example
Individuals can vote once a day for their favourite charity. The voting runs from 1 to 23 September 2015.
To be eligible, charities must have a recognised charity status, and a registered Twitter account in their organisation’s name.
Organisations that are not eligible include religious organisations, schools, universities and trade associations.
