Charities using e-mail to communicate with donors and supporters need to ensure that they neither receive e-mail messages with virus-ridden attachments nor, perhaps worse, send out a message with a virus in an attachment. An IT security policy and the use of regularly updated anti-virus software should reduce the chances of such a worrying occurrence.

In addition charities can consider using the anti-virus services of a company like Star Internet Ltd. This Internet Service Provider automatically scans the in-bound and out-bound e-mail messages of its clients for viruses to protect them. Charities using this service include Sense, WorldVision, and Cranfield University.
