The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has launched an appeal to help the 2.5 million facing severe food shortages in Niger and the surrounding countries of Mali, Mauritania and Burkina Faso.

The DEC, which represents 13 aid agency charities, is seeking donations via phone, online, and at high street banks and post offices.

TV and radio appeals launched the appeal earlier today with actor Dougray Scott and presenter Jeremy Vine fronting them on BBC and ITV.

The emergency appeal is the first launched by the DEC since the South Asian tsunami appeal launched in December 2004 which secured a record response.

DEC chief executive Brendan Gormley told the BBC that there were about 6,000 phone lines and 36,000 calls had been received up until the TV appeal was first broadcast.

In the 24 hours following the launch, the appeal has raised over £5.4 million.
