From night walks to sleep outs – 7 fundraising events

Cardiff’s City Hospice recently held its night time Sparkle Walk to raise funds, while Alabaré’s BIG Sleep is coming up later this month. Here’s news of 7 fundraising events.
City Hospice’s Sparkle Walk
A 10k night time walk in aid of Cardiff charity City Hospice returned for a second year on 18 September. Over two hundred people took part in The Sparkle Walk raising thousands of pounds. Participants donned glitter and glowsticks for the 10k night time walk, with many also carrying photographs of their loved ones to keep them and their memory close during the event. The evening began with a fun warm up before setting off on the route which started and finished within the grounds of Insole Court. The starlit walk through Llandaff and Whitchurch included a stop at City Hospice where participants could leave a message for their loved ones in the charity’s specially designed Memory Garden.

ArT1st Live for JDRF
Performers living with type 1 diabetes – including cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and comedian Ed Gamble – gathered together in September for an event to celebrate the talents of those with the condition. ArT1st Live took place at London’s Drapers’ Hall in support of type 1 diabetes charity JDRF. The ArT1st project was founded in 2019 by Professor Partha Kar OBE, National Specialty Advisor for Diabetes at NHS England, in collaboration with a committee of people living with the condition and diabetes healthcare professionals, to unite people who have type 1 diabetes. Its events are co-organised by people living with the condition.
Clan Cancer Support’s lighthouse auction
Clan Cancer Support is calling on bidders to support its auction finale on Monday 1 November, which is taking place following its 10-week ‘Light the North’ lighthouse trail. All 50 large lighthouse sculptures from the trail and 8 small lighthouses will take centre stage in the auction at Thainstone Exchange, Inverurie, which will be both an in-person and on-line live event. Funds raised from the auction will go on to aid cancer support services for people, right in the heart of Clan’s communities all across the North-east.
The Daily Mile’s Eliud’s Mile
The Daily Mile, supported by INEOS, has announced that Eliud’s Mile will take place on 12 October. The event will celebrate sporting legend Eliud Kipchoge and encourage participants to run, jog or walk 1-mile (or more) on the day. Participants from around the world pledge miles online, in an effort to generate a collective distance of 25,000 miles. Last year Eliud’s Mile resulted in 26,549 miles being logged, with over 2,691 runners, joggers and walkers pledging their efforts from over 138 participating countries. Those participating in Eliud’s Mile are encouraged to share images and videos whilst completing their activity.
Fundraising bike ride for Ribble Valley Dementia Action Alliance
Staff at Ribble Valley Country & Leisure Park are aiming to raise £5,000 for local charity Ribble Valley Dementia Action Alliance with a 26-mile off-road cycling route around Gisburn Forest. Leah Dodd, Scott Lee and Harry Sosnowy, who all work at the Park Leisure park, attempted the challenge on 29 September. The event is part of Park Leisure’s wider campaign to support local charities and follows a weekend of fundraising events at the Ribble Valley park, which involved everything from a raffle to staff being hit by wet sponges while in the stocks.
Alabare’s BIG Sleep
Veterans’ charity Alabaré will be taking its flagship fundraising event, the BIG Sleep, to the Tower of London on Friday 22 October. For the first time, participants will bed down for the night in front of the Traitor’s Gate, at the Tower, all whilst raising funds and awareness to support homeless and vulnerable ex-military service personnel. With support and endorsements from Bear Grylls and Dan Snow, and the legendary Yeoman Warders, Alabaré is hoping to raise £250,000 for this event; these funds will specifically support street homeless veterans, provide supported accommodation and opportunities to develop skills and confidence.
Countryfile ramble for BBC Children in Need
The Countryfile team is set to return for another year of walking, talking and rambling for the Countryfile Ramble special; raising money for BBC Children in Need. Now in its seventh consecutive year, the return of the 2021 ramble will see presenters including Matt Baker, Ellie Harrison, Tom Heap, Margherita Taylor, Steve Brown and Charlotte Smith joined by children and young people across the UK supported by BBC Children in Need funded projects. John Craven will also be supporting, championing his co-stars and catching-up with members of the public via video-calls on their own organised rambles. Over the course of six years, ramblers have raised more than £10.3million for the charity. This year’s presenter rambles will take place in October and will be broadcast on The Countryfile Ramble for BBC Children in Need, on BBC One, Sunday 24 October.
