Great North Snowdogs take over North East in sculpture trail

Melanie May | 7 July 2016 | News

The North East of England will be overrun with Snow Dogs this autumn, as streets, parks and open spaces across Sunderland, Gateshead and Tyneside, become home to 60 giant Snowdog sculptures and over 100 little Snowdogs.
The trail will take place over 10 weeks, from September to November. The Snowdogs are inspired by the Raymond Briggs stories The Snowman and The Snowdog, The large sculptures are 1.5m high, and will be individually decorated by professional artists including graffiti artist Temper aka Arron Bird, Jeff Rowland, and Joanne Wishart,
The Great North Snowdogs trail will open on 19th September and a trail map, dedicated app and website will lead visitors from popular tourist destinations to lesser known areas of the region, along the route covered by the Metro system and other public transport. A separate trail of little Snowdogs, created by local school children and community groups, will also be exhibited.
Once the trail draws to a close on 29th November, the sculptures will be auctioned to raise funds for St Oswald’s Children’s Hospice, which has partnered with Wild in Art to create the trail. Fenwick, Metro operator Nexus, Barbour, Virgin Money, Sunderland AFC, DFDS, KPMG and Barclays are among the event sponsors.
Anita Ball, director of income generation and marketing, at St Oswald’s Children’s Hospice, said:

“The Snowdogs event will showcase the rich cultural offer and wealth of artistic talent in the area and will ultimately raise money for children with life limiting conditions here in the North East.”
