Stars lend their support to charity

It’s been a great month for celebrity fundraising. Here is a round-up of some of the more recent campaigns that have received star backing.
1. Eva Longoria’s Global Gift Gala
Eva Longoria recently hosted this year’s Global Gift Gala, which saw more than £200,000 raised for good causes. Among the items sold were drawings by Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, sourced by social enterprise platform CharityStars.
Organisations benefitting from the gala include The Eva Longoria Foundation, The Diana Award, and the Global Gift Foundation. The stars were out in force for the event, with performances from Ronan Keating, Anastacia, Collette Cooper, Stooshe, and Kym Mazelle.

2. J.K. Rowling raises money for Moldova
J.K. Rowling has just launched a fundraising campaign through Lumos, the organisation she founded to help countries reform their services for disadvantaged children. The campaign launched on indiegogo, and is aimed at raising $35,000 to furnish the Special Education Unit in Ialoveni, Moldova with specialised equipment for children with special needs.

3. Joanna Lumley asks people to support families in Africa
Joanna Lumley has added her support to this year’s Send a Cow Gift catalogue, which enables people to buy and donate practical items to help families in Africa become more self-sufficient, and is promoting this year’s catalogue with a panto spoof.
Lumley said:
“Who really needs another pair of socks at Christmas when you can give a present that will change lives for years to come? The fabulous thing about Send a Cow Christmas gifts is the impact goes on long after the tree is taken down.”

4. Celebs donate clothing to keep out the cold
A long list of celebrities supported Turn2us at the end of November with a celebrity clothes auction on eBay to raise funds for its No Cold Homes campaign and help more people across the UK who are struggling to afford their energy costs this winter. More than 20 celebrities took part, with items including an Armani cardigan from Benedict Cumberbatch, an O’Neill jacket from Ed Sheeran, and coats from Dame Helen Mirren and Fern Britton. The auction continues until 9 December.

5. The music world raises money for WaterAid
Also in the Christmas spirit and in another eBay auction, a long list of music acts are supporting WaterAid’s Christmas auction, which saw a collection of signed vinyl records from artists including Duran Duran, Noel Gallagher, The Libertines, and La Roux, up for grabs, plus a Gibson Les Paul guitar signed by Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi.

6. Nancy Dell’Olio donates to the Elton John AIDS Foundation
Nancy Dell’Olio has also been raising funds for charity. She recently held her own One Woman Show at London’s Hippodrome with some of the money going to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Ahead of the show Nancy donated two VIP tickets and a meet and greet opportunity, auctioned through CharityStars.
The highest bidder won the auction for £430, which went to the charity.

7. The Pope becomes a pop star (nearly)
Last but not least, the Pope has released an album. Wake Up! combines Christian hymns reworked into everything from prog-rock to Latin-inspired pop, and Gregorian chants, and speeches given by the Pontiff himself, and part of the proceeds will be going to a charity supporting refugees.
