Will notification service for Northern Ireland charities announced

Howard Lake | 21 September 2012 | News

Will to Give, the organisation promoting legacy giving in Northern Ireland, is to launch a Will Notification Service for charities in November.
The WillGiftsNI Service will let charities know when they have been named in wills probated in Northern Ireland. They will receive a copy of the actual will to give them a better idea of the person or motivation behind the legacy.
Colin Ferguson, Chair of Will to Give said: “We are very pleased to work with the Department of Social Development and the Probate Office in Northern Ireland to make this service available. Will to Give was formed by local charities to provide exactly this sort of practical service as well as promote will-giving and to make it more of a social-norm.”
Not-for-profit business services company Sector Matters will administer WillGiftsNI on behalf of Will to Give. Paula Reynolds, its Director, said: “For the first time charities will receive early notification of money left to their charity. This will enable subscribers to have the opportunity to receive money more promptly and to forecast future income from legacy gifts.”
She said their service will be able to send copies of the actual will to named charities giving them a much fuller picture of the person who has so generously thought of them.

Data on charitable wills in Northern Ireland

Neil Irwin of NICVA, Secretariat for Will to Give, commented: “Will to Give is putting in place plans to analyse wills with charitable gifts to produce an accurate picture of will-giving in Northern Ireland. This is to inform future strategy at the micro and macro level for the promotion of legacy giving and to increase philanthropy to the not-for-profit sector.”

Fees for WillGiftsNI

Irwin said that charities wishing to join the service would pay an annual subscription fee divided into £15 + VAT a month if they were Will to Give members. Non Will to Give members would pay £40 + VAT a month. There would be no charge for each notification.
The new service will be formally launched at The Will to Give conference which takes place at NICVA in Belfast on 9 November 2012.
