John Bird launches affinity card to benefit local shops and charities

John Bird, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Big Issue, and his daughter Diana Bird have set up an affinity card that promotes shopping locally and raises funds for charities.

The Wedge Card offers discounts and special offers from hundreds of local shops and independent businesses with the aim of “re-vitalis[ing] local communities by offering an affinity scheme to customers using local shops and services”.

It costs £20 for a year. Initially it covers just central London businesses but the Birds plan to expand it across London. Half of the fee is donated to local charities.
