SVP aims for ‚€5 million this Christmas

Irish charity St Vincent de Paul is aiming to raise ‚€5 million before Christmas to fund its work with the poor. SVP Week runs from next Sunday culminating in a nationwide mass collection on December 10th.

SVP reported an increase in donations from ‚€23.5 million in 2004 to ‚€30.8 million in 2005. Much of this increase was down to a particularly sharp increase in legacies, from ‚€5.7 million to ‚€11.47 million. The society is one of the biggest recipients of charitable legacies in Ireland and earlier this year made the news when a legacy worth ‚€10 million was left to a Galway SVP branch.

In total, SVP spent ‚€41 million in 2005, with the balance of money coming from the government.
