The Guardian has today launched its Christmas appeal to encourage readers to donate to international development charity Practical Action and eight mental health projects in the UK.

The six-week campaign will include considerable editorial support from The Guardian, with journalists visiting and reporting on the eight UK projects and stories from Practical Action’s projects in Kenya, Bangladesh, Peru and Sri Lanka.

The UK projects were selected with the help of donor advisory service New Philanthropy Capital.

The appeal includes a call to give regular monthly gifts.

Last year’s Guardian appeal raised £636,804 including Gift Aid. Over the next five years readers have pledged to give more than £1.5 million.
