YHA to merge unincorporated association and limited company

The Youth Hostel Association (YHA) has voted to create a single charitable company with a revised objective in an effort to reduce the amount of time and money spent on administration.

The decision was taken at the charity’s Annual General Meeting and the resulting company will continue to be named YHA (England and Wales) Limited, but will be generally referred to as YHA.

It is formed by the amalgamation of the existing charitable Company and the charitable Association.

The move also prompted a slight revision of YHA’s overall charitable aim, to incorporate aspects from both previous bodies, reflect the reality of YHA’s work more accurately and allow innovation in the future.

Explaining the thinking behind the change, YHA National Chairman Chris Boulton said: “We deliberately kept changes to the minimum required by law to reassure our members as we made the change.”

Officials from the Charity Commission have advised on the move, which ensures the administration of the single YHA charitable company will be simpler, more transparent and less expensive.

Previously YHA has operated as two legal, charitable entities, an unincorporated Association and a company limited by guarantee.
