Matched giving requirement dropped from local heritage grants

Howard Lake | 23 January 2003 | News

A new grant structure introduced by the Local Heritage Initiative will give communities across England more power to care for the natural, built, industrial, archaeological features and customs that make up their area’s past.

Community groups wishing to undertake projects of this type can now apply for 100% grants up to £25,000 without any requirement to provide matched funding. A percentage of these funds will also be made available in advance to allow schemes to get underway without financial constraints.

The Local Heritage Initiative was set up in 2000. It is administered by the Countryside Agency and funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund. Until now, groups wishing to undertake a heritage project have need to provide an element of matched funding, usually 5% of the overall cost. They have also been required to claim back funds after payment, rather than being able to benefit from cash advances.
