The International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) has published a book called ‘How to Start and develop a Horse Welfare Charity’ designed to help spread best practice internationally.

The publication is part of the ILPH’s aim to assist the maximum number of horses worldwide.

ILPH Chief Executive John Smales said: “The ILPH is reluctant to spend its money in countries which are already fairly wealthy, but do not have effective horse welfare charities to solve the problem. For this reason we have written this book ‘How to Start and develop a Horse Welfare Charity’. We will make this available to any organisation in any country which has the enthusiasm to start a horse welfare charity, and can show us that it has the ability to make it work. Indeed, though our funds are limited, we might even give some financial assistance to set up such a charity.”

The 76-page book, compiled by former ILPH Director of Operations David Mountford, has already been translated into Spanish and further translations will be made as necessary.

The Guide has been put together to provide some basic direction on how to set up an equine welfare organisation anywhere in the world. Among many other topics it provides detailed information on what to consider before you start; the importance of clearly defined missions, goals and objectives; how to fund your work and the support systems you need to consider putting in place for long term success.
