Howard Lake | 15 December 2011 | News

Google has announced that it has donated more than $115 million during 2011 to nonprofit organizations and academic institutions around the world.
The donations by Google.org, Google’s charitable foundation, includes $40 million supporting four specific causes:
• science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education;
• girls’ education;
• empowerment through technology;
• and fighting human trafficking and modern-day slavery.
UK charities that have benefited from grants include BBC World Service Trust, CAMFED International, Bletchley Park Trust and Generating Genius.
The donation of £550,000 to the Bletchley Park Trust was towards the match funding it needs to embark on the first stage of a £15 million project to transform the site into a world-class heritage and education centre. Google has supported the Trust before: in 2010 it helped it to purchase the Turing Papers.

In addition to the grants, Google said that its in-kind support programmes such as Google Grants (free Google AdWord advertising) and Google Apps for Education were worth to more than $1 billion to nonprofits. The company’s annual GoogleServe event and simialr programmes resulted in Google staff volunteering more than 40,000 hours of their own time.
