Royal British Legion severs partnership with NOTW

Howard Lake | 7 July 2011 | News

The Royal British Legion will not be working with the News of the World any more after allegations that relatives of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq may have had their phones hacked by a private investigator working for the newspaper.

A statement from the RBL said that it has suspended all relations with the NoW until the allegations were resolved. A spokeswoman said: “We can’t with any conscience campaign alongside the News of the World on behalf of armed forces families while it stands accused of preying on these same families in the lowest depths of their misery. The hacking allegations have shocked us to the core.”

The RBL will also be reviewing its advertising with News International papers which include the NoW, The Sun and The Times. The phone hacking story has led high-profile, high-spending advertisers to boycott the NoW this weekend, including Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi, Virgin Holidays, Specsavers, Halifax Bank, the Co-operative Group and Vauxhall.
