Swapathon to raise funds for disability organisations

ADD International is inviting UK disability organisations and their supporters to take part in the first nationwide swapathon to promote and raise money for disability rights.
‘Stamp and Swap’ will take place on Friday 3 December 2010, the International Day of Disabled People. Across the country, people will be encouraged to engage in fun swaps in return for a £5 donation.
By selecting them from a list, UK disability organisations who register with Stamp and Swap will receive £1 of every £5 donated to the campaign by their members, friends and families.
Sarah Sandon, Director of Fundraising and Communications at ADD International, said: “It’s an ideal opportunity to have fun in the run-up to Christmas, help your organisation and give your stamp of support to a new campaign which we expect to grow year on year.
“What you choose to swap is entirely up to you. It could be an experience or a physical item. You could be the boss for the day, swap some essential skills with your workmates or get rid of those unwanted books, DVDs or fashion accessories in exchange for something you’d really like. The key is to have fun while supporting the rights of disabled people.”
The campaign has attracted support from celebrities including paralympian Anne Wafula Strike, TV presenter Keith Chegwin, Eastenders actor David Proud and actress Julie Fernandez.
ADD International, previously known as Action on Disability and Development, is a UK-based charity that works with the disability movements in Africa and Asia from a human rights perspective.
UK disability organisations can register for the campaign by contacting Gemma White at ADD International on 01373 473064 or email Ge***@st**********.uk.
Once registered, benefiting charities will be listed on the ‘Who will benefit’ area of the campaign website and they can use the resources available to download to promote their involvement to their supporters.
ADD International will log the support that comes in from each charity and return the proportion due after an independent audit in January 2011.
