DEC to launch Haiti Earthquake Appeal

The Disasters Emergency Committee, representing the major UK aid agencies, is to launch the Haiti Earthquake Appeal tomorrow with the support of UK broadcasters including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Al-Jazeera.
The donation telephone lines and website are already open for donations, and the DEC announced the appeal early yesterday evening via social networks including Twitter and Facebook.
This is the second time that the DEC has promoted its appeal a day or two before the main TV campaign airs, following the early success of the Indonesia, Philippines & Vietnam appeal in October 2009. Over £3 million was raised in the first week, with DEC acknowledging the role of social media in contributing to that total. As UK Fundraising reported, even though DEC had only started using Twitter a few days before the appeal began, Twitter was the second largest source of visits to the DEC website, ahead of Facebook.
