NI Hospice income declined last year
Charitable income for the Northern Ireland Hospice fell last year by 7%, from just over £7 million to £6.6 million, according to the charity’s latest accounts.
Both donation income and legacy income declined in 2018, from £5 million to £4.8 million and from £2 million to £1.7 million respectively. The Hospice also posted a drop in voluntary income in 2017.
Legacy income accounted for 13% of the Hospice’s income last year with the balance, 37%, coming from donation income which includes all donations, community and support group income. The accounts show a reduction in restricted donation income as the capital campaign for the new hospice winds down.
Income from charitable trading increased from £2.2 million to £2.4 million, with net income up by £100,000 to £344,000. The Hospice has a network of 28 shops and café operations in Northern Ireland. In 2017 the charity opened a new charity shop and a café.

Another category of income which declined last year was grants which fell from £4.4 million to £4 million mainly due to the ending of a major grant from the Echo and Hidden programme.
The cost of income generation was roughly similar for last year and year before at £1.2 million.
The accounts for the Northern Ireland Hospice state the fundraising department is implementing ‘transformational change’ following strategic reviews. The Hospice says a feature of the new strategy is donor engagement, with an increased emphasis on local activity and events fundraising.
Total charity income, which includes funding from statutory sources, also fell from £13.8 to £13 million. Voluntary income accounts for over 50% of the charity’s income.
