A KNOCKOUT FUNDRAISER FOR
ST TERESA’S HOSPICE
14/08/06
A number of local businesses and organisations have taken part in an annual fundraising event, which is expected to raise more than £6,000 for St Teresa’s Hospice.
The It’s A Knockout event, held at the Darlington Football Rugby Club, saw 17 teams of between five and 10 members, taking part in a day-long series of fun challenges.
The outdoor competitions, based on the original 1960s game show, included The Watering Hole, Belly Basket Ball, Hoopla, Super Tower, Foam Pit and Lets Ski If You Can Do It. Participants were also given additional points for taking part in silly dancing between challenges, when spectators were also treated to on-stage performances from a number of imitation acts, including look-alikes’ of Ali G and the 118-118 runners.
Teams were entered for the event by Darlington Motor Factors, Sherwoods, Asda, The Clique, DHLXL, DOS, Laddaw Ltd, Meadows Road Construction and Savers. Barclays and Cummins also entered two teams each, while the hosts, St Teresa’s Hospice, had three teams taking part.
The winners on the day were the Hospice Hotshots, who represented the charity and The Clique group, who are based at the White Swan public house in Startforth.
Donations are still being collected, but in total, It’s a Knockout 2006 is expected to raise more than £6,000 on behalf of the Darlington-based Hospice, through team sponsorship, which was set at a minimum of £400 per team, a fundraising raffle, sponsorship from the Darlington Operatic Society and additional matched funding from Barclays.
All proceeds will now be used to help fund St Teresa’s Hospice’s palliative and respite care services, including Hospice at Home and a range of counselling, which are provided free to people living with South Durham and North Yorkshire.
St Teresa’s Hospice Director, Jane Bradshaw, said: This year’s It’s A Knockout event was fantastic. The weather was great, we had an excellent turn out and everybody really seemed to enjoy themselves. In fact, nine of the teams that took part have already signed up for next year’s event.
I would like to thank everyone who took part on the day, including the local fire service, who helped us soak our contestants for one of the challenges, and Blackwell Meadows for providing the venue and the children’s entertainment.â€
