77-year-old man becomes Barnardo’s cycling ambassador

Competitive cyclist for more than 60 years, Mick Ives has become cycling ambassador for Barnardo’s.
Ives, from North Tyneside, has won 79 British Cycling Championships. As Barnardo’s cycling ambassador, he has now set himself his biggest challenge of riding the Giro d’Italia at the age of 77 in May, which involves cycling nearly 3,400km from Sardinia to Milan in three weeks.
He is aiming to raise £60,000 through the event: £1,000 for each year he has been involved in the sport. The money will support Barnado’s, as well as Rainbow Children’s Hospice, Padraic Sweeney Kidney Research, and Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice with Ives sponsored by Jewson, Polypipe and McCann.
In his role of cycling ambassador, Ives will also be supporting Barnardo’s cyclists taking on the Prudential Ride London event in July.
