Pensioners are the most generous donors, says Mintel

Market analysts Mintel report that pensioners are the most active charity donors, compared to other age groups.

Three-quarters of people aged 65 or more gave more than £5 to charity in 2005, according to Mintel. Across age groups the national average is 64%, with 44% of 15 to 24 year old giving £5 or more, and 69% of those in their sixties.

Donors are most likely to give to emergency appeals, events or by buying Christmas cards, according to the Mintel Charities report.

Only 3% of those questioned by Mintel had opted to set up a regular direct debit in response to a face-to-face fundraising or direct mail ask.

Mintel say that more people are giving £5 or more to charity, rising from from 57% in 2003 to 64% in 2005.

The findings are based on an Omnibus survey of 25,000 adults aged 15 and over together with a consumer survey of 1,015 people in the same age group. Both were carried out in 2005.
