Thames whale charity seeks funds with online auction

Howard Lake | 26 January 2006 | News

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue organisation, which attempted to rescue the whale recently stranded in the River Thames, is trying to raise funds with an online auction of the watering can that was used to keep the whale rehydrated.

The charity spent £5,000 trying to rescue the northern bottlenosed whale.

According to the BBC, at one point the bid price for the watering can on eBay reached £115,000 which raised concerns that some bids might not be genuine. In response the BDMLR switched to restricting the auction to pre-approved bidders. The current bid stands at £10,600.

The BDMLR has also promoted its work on its website and on its front page is encouraging one-off and regular donations using Paypal.

The charity certainly has an unparalleled opportunity to promote its work and seek funding after an estimated 230 million people watched TV reports on the whale’s progress last Saturday lunchtime.
