Health charities dominate Irish charity income list
A list compiled of the biggest charities in Ireland by Boardmatch Ireland is dominated by health organisations.
Topping the list by income is St Vincent’s Health Care which had income of €363 million in 2011, followed by the Mater University Hospital with an income of €258 million.
The top four charities are all hospitals with the Rehab Group, with an income of €177 million, fifth on the list. The Rehab Group provides services to people with disability in Ireland, the UK and Poland. Another organisation affiliated to the Rehab Group, RehabCare, appears on the list with an income of €45 million.
The CEO of Rehab appeared before the Irish Dail’s public accounts committee yesterday to answer questions about the level of her salary.
Nearly all the charities on the list receive significant public funding as well as raising funds from the public. For the most part, public funding is the largest percentage of the organisations’ income.
Development charity Concern Worldwide appears sixth on the list (income €160 million). Also on the list is Goal with an income €61 million.
