£6m donated by mobile to DEC Philippines Typhoon appeal

The DEC has received £6 million in donations via mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones in response to its Philippines Typhoon emergency appeal.
This is the largest amount given to a DEC by mobile devices, and the largest number of mobile donations it has received. It has also been given over a much shorter time period than for previous DEC appeals.
Apple iOS users give more
Donations from mobile devices have overwhelmingly come from Apple iOS users, who have donated £4.4 million using their iPhone or iPad.
Instant donations via text
When the DEC Philippines Typhoon Appeal was launched over two weeks ago on 11 November, more than one quarter of a million pounds was raised via text messages alone in the first hour. For the first hour of the DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal, the figure for text donations was just under £100,000.
Text donations continue to come in, with noticeable surges in response to particular campaigns such as The Sun’s appeal, the televised appeal on ITV during the X Factor, and during the England football match on 15 November.

Mobile giving to the DEC Philippines appeal in numbers
- £3.5 million was given by donors using tablets
- £1.3 million has been donated via text messages
- £5.7 million was given by PayPal, including £1.75 million on tablets and smart phones.
DEC Head of Fundraising Adil Husseini said:
“We have seen that sending text donations is increasingly popular, and offering people the choice to give via PayPal accounts has also made the process of donating via mobiles, tablets and computers much faster and hassle free for many.
“More than one million people have given money since the appeal began, and the public’s generous donations have helped enabled our member aid agencies to reach hundreds of thousands of people in the Philippines who have had their lives torn apart by this disaster.”
