Happy eighth birthday to Nonprofit Online News

Howard Lake | 3 April 2005 | News

Michael Gilbert’s excellent Nonprofit Online News this week celebrates its eighth anniversary of offering insightful and practical news and tips for nonprofit organisations.

Michael, perhaps best known for his Gilbert Email Manifesto of April 2001, started Nonprofit Online News as a private link list for his colleagues. Every day it includes two or three paragraphs summarising a new resource, book or article that he has discovered, adding his own analysis together with a link to the resource.

He then opened Nonprofit Online News to the public in the form of what has now been termed a weblog, before the word had been coined. “It’s probably tied for the oldest weblog still being published”, he suggests.

But it is much more than a weblog. Gilbert says “it’s a newsletter, a magazine, a community – but it will always be a weblog at heart.”

Gilbert’s interests and expertise are wide-ranging, covering not just nonprofit technology but management, governance, policy, and knowledge management. He has also been vocal in his concern at the impact on the US nonprofit world of the Bush administration and its policies.
