Charities' public service role could threaten donations, say CAF

Donations to UK charities could fall if more charities begin providing public services, according to CAF’s Chief Executive, Stephen Ainger, because donors could be confused by the blurring line between state and voluntary sector.
Speaking at CAF’s annual conference yesterday, he said: “the question is whether an increased focus on charities and mainstream services will serve to confuse people even more – leading to doubts as to whether some charities are really independent or have simply become agents for the delivery of a government’s priorities.
“If they know that more and more of their favourite charities are state funded to deliver direct services, will they stop giving or switch their support to other bodies?”
