Web design consultancy Poptel believes that the forthcoming Disability Rights Commission report on Web site accessiblity will help tackle the digital divide.

Poptel is already working with clients to
to ensure that Web site managers will be able to respond quickly to the Disability Rights Commission’s report on Web accessibility which will be published later this month.

MD Nelson Wootton said: “We are expecting the demand for help with accessible design will grow significantlty when this report is published. For this reason, we are
working with 49 local authorities in the North West to ensure that they all have the skills – in house – to improve the accessibility standards on their Web sites.

“We are establishing a peer-network of Web designers in local government to
ensure that they can collectively build up their skills in this area – and help each other out.”

Poptel Technology offers accessibility checks for Web sites which “delivers an objective assessment of compatibility with the key requirements of the current accessibility standards”. The final report
includes recommendations on how to address any shortcomings identified.
