More major gifts received online in USA

More donors are giving donations of $1,000 or more online, according to a survey of American non-profits by Kintera Inc, the online fundraising technology company.

Kintera examined the results of 3,151 large and small fundraising campaigns that received donations during 2003. Some lasted a few weeks, others six months.

Classifying a major gift as any donation over $1,000, Kintera reports that such gifts amounted to 8.3% of all donations received online. Of these major gifts, 53.6% were exactly $1,000, raising 34.2% of all large online gifts. A further 3.6% were $5,000 or higher, raising 15.4% of all large online gifts. Of the 3,151 campaigns, 460 (14.6% of the total) received at least one gift of $1,000 or more online.

Major gifts will seldom dominate a non-profit’s online income, but given this growing willingness at least by American donors to give large gifts online, it makes sense to ensure that a charity’s Web site is welcoming to current or prospective major donors.
