From altruism to capitalism: what lies in between?

The Royal Society of Arts has published the text of a lecture given in March in London by John Kingston and Stephen Lloyd.
On 12 March 2003 John Kingston of Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) and Stephen Lloyd of solicitors Bates Wells & Braithwaite presented a lecture at the Royal Society of Arts entitled “From altruism to capitalism: what lies in between?” Together they mapped out the emerging territory between the traditional charity model and the for-profit company model.
Their lecture looked at what is happening in this area and why. They explained what could be done to bolster these new approaches that seek to combine financial skills and capacities with achieving real social change, and thereby adding new resources to those available to charities and social enterprises.

As well as being a charity lawyer Stephen Lloyd is also a charity trustee and an advocate of the Public Interest Company idea. John Kingston was previously at 3i Group and Save the Children and is now Director of CAF’s Venturesome initiative.
