National Trust reaches three million members

The National Trust has trebled its membership in 20 years.

The Dent family from Derby took the National Trust over the three million membership mark. They joined via the charity’s Web site.

The Trust is the country’s largest private land-owner, and is the third biggest membership organisation in the UK after the RAC and AA. It has three times the combined membership of all political parties in Britain, and is the biggest national conservation organisation in Europe. In many towns, including Budleigh Salterton, Chipping Camden, Burgess Hill and Tonbridge, more than a quarter of households are members of the National Trust.

Nearly £70 million was generated in membership fees in 2001/2, and 40,000 volunteers contributed 2.5 million hours of work for the Trust in the same year.
