The research attempts to encourage charities to publicise the vast contribution made by people volunteering their time and skills.
The survey of 156 groups found that their combined 2 million or more volunteers amounted to the equivalent of 224,000 full-time workers. The annual value of volunteers to the Samaritans alone, for example, ranged from £11m at the minimum wage of £3.70 an hour to £31m if you adopt a a more realistic market rate of £10 an hour.
