ZSL’s pygmy goats are helping it raise funds by taking part in its Around the World in 30 Days challenge, while Carers Step Out has launched its first Big Step Out walk. All this and more in our latest fundraising events round up.
Goats join in ZSL’s Around the World in 30 Days
ZSL London Zoo’s pygmy goats are among those taking on ZSL’s new Around the World in 30 Days challenge. Kicking off on 1 June, it sees participants set a distance they’d like to cover across 30 days with the collective aim of travelling 40,075km – equal to the circumference of the globe. Participants can take on their challenge of choice by running, walking, trotting, wheeling or cycling, turning their daily exercise into fundraising. London Zoo’s herd of five pygmy goats already enjoy a daily walk around the zoo, and are aiming to rack up 12km and fundraise £500. Averaging 6km an hour, zookeepers expect their daily walk to take under an hour a day.

Babble becomes lead partner for Ride Across Britain
Technology provider Babble has become the new lead partner for Ride Across Britain, which takes place in September 2022. The move is part of Babble’s commitment to raising over £500,000 for charities including the Prince’s Trust and the Buffalo Foundation. Ride Across Britain is a cycling challenge that takes place from 10-18 September, covering 980 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
Carers Step Out launches Big Step Out
Carers Step Out is inviting friends, carers, school children, supporters and well-behaved dogs to take part in its first Big Step Out walk of 1, 3, 6 or 12 miles around Bewl Water on Wednesday 29 June starting at 10am. Everyone across the UK is also invited to join in with a walk of any length in their own geographical area during June and July to show their support of the country’s 13.2 million unpaid carers. The charity is asking everyone who takes part to raise what they can in sponsorship, which will all go towards arranging more Stepping Out walks across the country.
Brake’s Kids Walk to see school children learn road safety
Brake’s Kids Walk takes place on Wednesday 22 June, when thousands of schoolchildren aged 4–11 will take part in a short, supervised walk to share important road safety messages. Participating schools receive an action pack, including lesson plans, assemblies, activities and posters featuring Shaun the Sheep.
Wings for Life World Run sees 165 countries take part
161,892 participants from 192 nations at runs in 165 countries all around the globe were part of the ninth annual edition of the Wings for Life World Run. Taking place in May, the runners and wheelchair users raised a total of 4.7 million euros for spinal cord research through their entry fees and donations. Jo Fukuda (JPN, 64.43km, Fukuoka/JPN) and Nina Zarina (RUS, 56.00km, Santa Monica/USA) were the respective men’s and women’s winners of the 2022 event. British Ultrarunner Tom Evans won the Austrian run in Vienna, running 63.4km in the capital. This year the participants covered an average 11.9 kilometres by the time the Catcher Car, the moving finishing line, caught and passed them.
7-a-side football tournament raises over £20K for Spread A Smile
A 7-a-side football tournament, organised by LMAC Group and DNA Insurance was held at Billericay Town F.C., raising over £20,000 for Spread A Smile. The tournament welcomed 19 teams from local Essex based businesses, and LMAC Group and DNA Insurance clients and co-workers, and was a joint effort, and masterminded by Lee McDowell of LMAC Group and Danny Imray from DNA Insurance, both big football lovers and major supporters of charity. Raising £20,224 via event sponsors, a raffle, individual donations and team entry costs, they also held an auction with items up for grabs, including Tyson Fury signed trunks and a Floyd Mayweather signed glove, signed football memorabilia, and luxury hotel stays. Alongside the players on the day, West Ham legends, Sir Trevor Brooking, Tony Gale, and Mark Ward turned up to cheer on the teams and share some of their stories.
Strictly Makaton challenge raises over £15K
Learn and Thrive, a UK Down’s syndrome educational charity, has raised £15,800 to develop new free online learning resources for the Down’s syndrome community. The Strictly Makaton challenge saw trustees being sponsored to learn Katy Perry’s hit ‘Roar’ in Makaton sign language in 21 days and then compete against each other in a live ‘Strictly Makaton’ final. The contestants were judged by a panel of young people with Down’s syndrome.
St Giles Hospice Solstice Walk takes on ‘Enchanted’ theme
This year’s St Giles Hospice Solstice Walk will be taking place with a new ‘Enchanted’ theme, a new location, a new 10k route and an earlier start time of 8pm. The fun will begin with a Welcome Party from 6pm at Lichfield Rugby Club, Cooke Fields, on Tamworth Road. The party will include face painting, stilt walkers, along with live music, food and drinks. During the evening everyone will join together to remember lost loved ones in a Moment of Reflection, releasing bubbles into the sky. The Enchanted Solstice Walk will start at 8pm, and walkers will be welcomed back across the finish line at the end with a special Solstice Walk medal. The new route will take around 90 minutes – or two hours at a gentle stroll – to complete.
