Roy Clark, Barnardo’s Director of Retail and Trading, is about raise funds for the charity by attempting to eat for a week on just £1 a day.

Together with his friend Steve Palmer, from Kettering, Clark hopes to raise £5,000 by spending just £7 on ingredients for breakfast, lunch and dinner to sustain him for seven days.

He said: “I’m getting really nervous about it now; I’ve been thinking about what I normally have to eat during the day and I think this is going to be tough.

“I’ll usually have a slice of toast in the morning and then a £3 meal deal for my lunch followed by a meal in the evening. So spending just £1 per day really does not seem very much at all.”

The only ‘free’ sustenance during the week will be water.

Mr Clark added: “This is going to be a difficult 7 days. We are going to have to do a lot of preparation so we can budget for the week and know what we are going to be cooking and eating each day.”

The pair have set up a fundraising page on JustGiving.
