Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) has made a grant of just under £1 million to global children’s charity Plan International UK to help transform the lives of thousands of people in Ethiopia.
The three year project help 88,000 people in 12 communities gain sustainable, long term access to safe water and sanitation, as well as providing enhanced school facilities for more than 30,000 school children at 20 primary schools. It is being run in the country’s Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region.
As part of the project, each school will be provided with a supply of menstrual hygiene materials, 40 water, sanitation and hygiene committees will be trained up and latrines with hand washing facilities will be built in each school.
Jersey Overseas Aid is an independent international aid agency funded by the States of Jersey whose aim is to help to reduce poverty and provide humanitarian aid in disasters and emergencies around the world.
A spokesperson at Jersey Overseas Aid, said: “We are proud to partner with Plan International UK, supporting this incredibly important cause and delivering a vital programme which will impact thousands of lives.
“This project is also important for us as it marks a transition for JOA towards supporting larger, longer-term, higher-impact development projects.”
Tanya Barron, Chief Executive at Plan International UK, added: “We’ve partnered with Jersey for more than twenty years and are proud to be working with them on this project…
“Girls can be particularly affected. For example, walking long distances for water and lack of materials when they start menstruating can lead to many pupils dropping out of school. By improving access to water, it will break down the barriers young people face when it comes to learning.”

JOA does not normally accept unsolicited grant applications for development projects. Instead, around 60 pre-approved agencies, including Plan International UK, are invited to bid for support at different times of the year.
